Random Stuff

Just some randsom thoughts...

Is anyone not cheering for Kurt Warner and the Cardinals this Sunday in the Super Bowl? Not many people, unless your allegiance was already with the Steelers. We'll be hosting our big Super Bowl Bash again this year, that's always a fun highlight for us.

I'm excited to be serving on a building committee and see some fruit from that as our church looks at the possiblilty of adding on in the near future... it's exciting to see!

I keep thinking I stood of stayed in coaching, the Broncos hired a head coach who is 32! Man, shoulda, woulda, coulda I guess.... although I remember all the hours... and the burden on family, it takes a special group... Then I think how blessed I am to do what I do... and I'm comfortable with my decision again.

Very random thought, but I really want to go Deer Hunting... ok somewhat random, we had a heard of 6 deer run in front of us last night on the way back from town... plus I've been watching the new Sportsman Channel on DirecTv. Just gives me the urge I guess.

Spiritually I'm thinking a lot about obedience I've been reading about it... and then in my God-time I read John 14:15-31... vs 21 was the one that really stood out to me... "Those who know my commands AND obey are they ones who love me".... (emphasis mine).

I was shocked to watch one of my favorite shows the other night... Jimmy Kimmel Live, to see Jimmy almost start to cry when he told us one of the characters on the show, Viatrice had died, R.I.P. Viatrice.

See I have lots of craziness that runs through my mind in the morning.... what a Journey!

Christmas Holiday... the good and the bad.

Christmas time for me is always an intersting time of year. I'm blessed with the work environment that I'm in, that even though I'm "busy" during this time of year, I also have the flexability to manuver my schedule around to spend time with my family while Kristy and the kids have days off from work and school. We've had fun spending time together, playing games, watching movies, and playing wii.

This year I was asked to speak at the Christmas-eve Candlelight service, it was a good experience, the church was pretty full, somone said there were 240 people, which was the most we've had in over 10 years.

I also was asked to speak in church this past Sunday, and will do so again this Sunday. Unfortunatly, my computer died with my PowerPoint presentation on it, and so I preached without it, and it's not looking like my computer is coming back to life anytime soon... so I'm bouncing around to other people's offices to check email and work on a computer while one is freed up. Not the most ideal situation. I never really thought that I loved my office, but when everything is in one place and you aren't were you can get to it easily... it definitly makes you appreciate what you have.

Obviously there are other disapointments this week too- but we won't mention the Broncos. Those playoff tickets that are sitting on my desk now are worthless! But I'm not bitter.

We just got to keep plugging along when life doesn't go as we expect it should.

On a side note, I'm pumped for tomorrow night, and the big annual New Year's eve party at Fischers! That's always a highlight for me to hang out with a great group of people.

I wonder what new Journies 2009 is going to bring?

Semester Ends

"Time Flys" is the saying... but I find that it's more and more true all the time. It's hard for me to believe that the Fall semester is coming to an end. It just seems like students were moving into the dorms. I've been praying for our students to finish the semester strong.... to give their best, not to get a good grade (although that would be great)... bu to give their best to God.

We're having a movie party tonight for those that can make it to just give them a chance to chill out, during finals week, and to give all of us a chance to hang out before the break.

Enjoy the last remaining moments of 2008! Life's a Journey and it goes fast!

Snow!

The big blizzard they had been expecting actually happened, we had between 6 and 8 inches fall in Brookings, but with winds of more than 40 mph, its hard to gauge how much we had exactly. We called off church Sunday morning, and there was no school on Monday.

We had some 4+ foot drifts in our driveway, thankfully we had neighbors who are good friends and helped us out... one neighbor walked in snowblower from around the corner and helped us Sunday night... but much of that blew back in. On Monday another neighbor with a snowblower attachment on his mower blew us out... it was a pretty sweet deal... I might have to save up to get one on for my mower. We're blessed by good neighbors!!!

Thanksgiving Part 2

Well after not being able to find Kristy's ring in the car, we decided to do our shopping in Wal-Mart. We found a couple of the things we were looking for, I got the last "Iron Man" on Blu-Ray! Kristy really wanted a specific toy that was on sale for Sidney, but it was sold out.

We got in line to pay, and were litterally almost to the back of the store, although we had some really nice people directly infront of us so it made it go much nicer. We got our stuff and headed outside... the sun was just coming up. This time we combed through the car removing things, detaching carpet... nothing.

We decided that we knew it was in the car, so we'd go to another store. I went to start the car and... it wouldn't start... someone offered to jump the car, that didn't work. We finally had to call Kristy's Dad to come and pick us up. While we waited for him, I decided to go to customer service, just in case the ring had fallen out of Kristy's coat or anything, and someone found it and turned it in. They hadn't. But while I waited in line, there about 20 carts full of junk people had brought to the check out isle and for one reason or another never purchased.

I looked and there in one of the carts, was they toy Kristy had been looking for, so I asked the lady if I could buy it, so we did get that.

We had to have our car towed and repaired, while we waited for news on the damage we went back to the hotel, pretty disappointed, and wishing we had stayed in bed.

Kristy was down by the pool watching the kids swim and I was in the room. The man from the garage called to tell me what was wrong with the car, and my cell phone got another beep, it was Kristy... she had found her ring!!!

Apparently it had fallen into her sweatshirt, and got caught in the "v" of her shirt. She was so happy! It made the pain to the wallet for fixing the car a little easier to bare.

Needless to say after the car was fixed we headed home, and didn't really want to do much else.

Thanksgiving Weekend

I hope you had a great Thanksgiving holiday and found as much to be thankful, besides all the yummy food.

We hosted Thanksgiving Dinner at our house for Kristy's family. Kristy's mom came up on Wednesday afternoon to help get food ready. Since I got the nice new grill this summer, I knew I wanted to grill "Tom the Turkey" this year, so I had been doing my research. We had bought "Tom" the week before and we had him thawing in the fridge a few days before. Wednesday night we started basting him. Then had a family movie night, and watched "Fred Clause", on a side note, I don't recommend this movie...

Thursday we woke up early, I fired up the grill, and we watched the parade, I made several visits outside to check on "Tom"... by the time lunch was to be served, he was a beatiful golden brown... "Tom" and the rest of the food was delicious.

Then after a short nap... we took off to Sioux Falls, Kristy's extended family spends Thanksgiving there together, the kids loved the pool... everyone goes out to the movies Thursday night, the Carlson's chose Madagascar 2... it was good, I'd recommend that one. Then we came back to the hotel, had pizza with the family- I watched the Longhorns beat A&M and then we crashed.

Part of the Sioux Falls tradition in the women getting up to go to shopping on Friday morning. I had always thought it was funny... but, at the same time, as a people watcher, I'd always wanted to see if the Black Friday crowd is as wild as it's made out to be. I saw in an Ad that Wal-Mart had Iron Man on Blu-Ray DVD for $15, that and my curiosity was all that I needed! Kristy and I got up at 4:30am and headed out... I have always said that nothing good happens before 10am, and I should have listened to my own words of wisdom.

On the way to Wal-Mart Kristy put some lotion on her hands in the car, she took her wedding ring off and then dropped it... she couldn't find it...No problem I thought, "we'll find it when we stop the car in the parking lot." Ahh... nope. After a thorough search of her jack, the car seat, under the car seat, in every part of the console between our seats... nothing. We decided to go into Wal-Mart and see if we could find it when we came out.

I'll leave you hanging and give you part 2 of this "Journey" next time.

NDSU Trip

I enjoyed my trip to NDSU last week, it was great to see the quality men that we have that represent the Jacks, both player and coaches.

I arrived at SDSU on Friday afternoon and watched our team do their walk through in Frost Arena, then we got on the buses (I road the Defensive Bus!) and went to the VFW for supper. Then loaded the buses again and headed for our hotel in Fargo. We got settled in and I ended up rooming with Stig. He's a good roomie. He had quite the room too... the bathroom was huge! That night we had snacks available in our room, so it was fun to meet the players in a more informal situation.

Saturday came and was full of meetings in the convention center, I did the chapel service and talked about Leaving a Legacy and tried to honor the seniors in the process. We ate and then loaded the buses and headed to the dome.

It was just like old times, warm-ups and all, the game was amazing, it was great to be on the sidelines. The NDSU fans were a treat too. We ended up winning the game by being aggresive and going for 2 and the win when we were down by 1, 25-24! They left a legacy, the first time the Jacks have won in Fargo since 1962! They got that monkey off their back.

I rode back to Brookings on our church bus, that had brought some students up for the game. We went out to eat in Fargo to celebrate, but couldn't find anywhere open past 10, we ended up going to Applebee's, which then after eating and riding in our converted school bus that maxes out at 60 mph, we got back to Brookings @ 3:30am, and I think I crawled into bed a little after 4am.

But it was all worth it!
